Staff Report –

Voters will decide who they want to represent them in Congress on Nov. 3.

Congressional District 5 covers Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, Inyo, Mariposa, Mono and Tuolumne counties. It also covers parts of El Dorado, Fresno, Madera, San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties.

Voters statewide approved Proposition 50, which expanded the geographic size of the district along the eastern part of the state.

Democrat Michael Masuda is an engineer, and worked at the U.S. State Department as a foreign affairs officer. Republican Rep. Tom McClintock is seeking reelection and serves on the House Judiciary, Natural Resources and Budget committees.

Both candidates agreed to a KCRA 3 debate, the Hearst TV ABC alliliate in Sacramento, Calif. to answer questions that impact voters, like wildfire prevention, making insurance affordable, bringing down the cost of living and what would be considered a successful outcome to the war in Iran.

KCRA 3 Political Director Ashley Zavala and California Tonight anchor Edie Lambert moderated the debate.
