A man from Vermont who was accused of attempted murder for shooting a victim twice in the head Sunday night on Schilling Road in Coulterville was on the run from police when he died in Modesto of self inflicted gunshot wounds, according to public posts on Facebook by the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office issued a BOLO, “Be on the Lookout” to all neighboring law enforcement agencies on Monday and by 9:30 a.m. he was found in Modesto.
ATTEMPTED MURDER SUSPECT WANTED
Keith Capron, 56, was wanted for an attempted murder that occurred Sunday night May 10, 2026, in the Coulterville area. Capron, suspected of shooting a victim in the head twice with a handgun, was last seen in the 5800 block of Schilling Road and was believed to be armed with the handgun used in the assault.
Capron fled the scene in a stolen blue 2008 Toyota Yaris, California license plate 8PWS917, similar to the vehicle pictured. Capron is originally from Vermont and has only been known to be in the Coulterville area for a short period of time.
Keith Capron was considered ARMED AND DANGEROUS, it was reported.
Capron was located in the Modesto area by the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office. As sheriff’s deputies attempted to contact him, Capron shot himself. Medical aid was immediately rendered, and Capron was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead from self-inflicted injuries.
The name of the victim has not been released.
